Well everyone has their limits you know. Some people can go without less sleep than other people. Some people only need 4 hours sleep and they're good to go for another 18+ hours. Some people need much more sleep though of around 8 hours. In fact, I think they say that you should get at least 8 hours sleep every 24 hours as not getting enough sleep can actually be harmful to your health. In fact, people that stay up longer and don't get as much sleep, often suffer from problems later on in life too including obesity, heart disease and diabetes and it shortens your life expectancy too. Where as getting enough sleep, and getting enough regular sleep has a lot of healthy benefits.
  • Sleep Boosts Your Immune System.
If you are the type of person that seems to catch every flu bug that does the rounds, it could be that you're not getting enough sleep. If you go without sleep for prolonged periods of time, it can play havoc on your immune system so that it's harder to fend off bugs and illnesses.
  • Sleep Helps You Loose Weight.
There's been studies done that show that people who sleep less than 7 hours gain more weight and are at a higher risk of becoming obese compared to people who get a full 8 hours of sleep per night. This is thought to be because people who sleep less have lower levels of leptin (a hormone that makes you feel full) and more levels of ghreline which is the hormone that makes you feel hungry.
  • Sleep Boosts Your Mental Wellbeing.
Just one single sleepless night and you can feel moody and irritable the next day. So it's no wonder that people who sleep less are more likely to develop long term bad moods, depression and anxiety. It was actually worked out that people who had depression with anxiety were getting much less sleep than people who didn't have those same symptoms.
  • Sleep Prevent Diabetes.
Not getting enough sleep can lead to you developing diabetes. It's something to do with the way the body produces and processes glucose which your body uses for fuel. Missing out on a lot of sleep may cause you to develop type 2 diabetes.
  • Sleep Increases Your Sex Drive.
People who don't get enough sleep have lower libidos and sex drive than people who get the full 8 hours per night. Some people who suffer from sleep apnoea have lower testosterone levels than those who have deep slumber sleeps.

So from that perspective, knowing these things and how sleep (and not enough of it) can effect you both mentally and physically, a lack of sleep can definitely effect you as a writer or freelancer. When you're body and mind is telling you to go to bed and your bed is calling out your name every 2 minutes. Don't ignore it! Drop the pen, shut the lid on your laptop and go and catch some z's. You'll do better for it!

That was very interesting Mike. You wrote a very good overview about the importance of sleep there. I am a person who is very deeply affected with the amount of hours I sleep. If I slept less than usual I end up being tired and unmotivated and quite unproductive the following day. So I honestly try to get at least 7 hours of sleep because otherwise I am not properly energized, and one day without a proper amount of productive working hours will end up affecting negatively subsequent days. So it ends up being a vicious cycle which is best avoided when you are a freelancer.

Absolutely Pro. Getting enough sleep per 24 hours per 7 days a week and per 31 days a month and for 12 months of the year regularly like clockwork as much as you can will have many healthy benefits not just for your mind but for your body as well. Sleep is natures greatest recharger and we sleep for a reason. Not just because we feel tired and need to rest, but that's just the way nature created us for a reason. Get more sleep - live a longer life! Can a lack of rest effect you and your writing?

As I'm writing this I realize I was pretty sleep deprived the last few days. Had only slept about 4-5 hours and I usually need 7-8 hours to be at my best. Still, feel fine at the moment but I think I need a good night sleep tonight.

Being very tired will result in low efficiency as well as a lack of creative flow. So, in other words, your writing and resulting content will be affected and will probability suck. So you if you have a deadline but you are very tired, I recommend you sleep for about 45 minutes, no more, no less. It will boost you up and you will function good for another few hours.

yea i can really agree with you, being tired will of course result in low efficiency and also cause a lack in creative flow, shoot if any thing lack of sleep can cause major writers block and nobody wants that , wow man you are pretty tough to go a few days on only four five hours of sleep i would not last 2 days on that kind of sleep schedule , must be working hard i resect it , how do you manage to keep up with that amount it sleep you say your doing pretty good what is keeping you going?

Coffee basically. I can't go own with a few sleeping hours for long periods of time. I got about 8 hours of sleep last night so I feel perfect today.

Yes I agree with you Cristian. When I feel tired I sort of cannot manage to concentrate well enough no mater how hard I try. And then I end up getting even more frustrated as apart from not being in the mood of writing, and feeling sleepy all the while, I also end up producing much less work within a given period of time when compared to what I normally manage to complete when I am feeling well rested. So I feel that it depends on how tired I am and also on my mood.

Hi jkeyz2 thanks for your question. I am sure insufficient rest should hamper your all daily work. As per as I know 6 to 7 hours mandatory for getting sleep and for taking rest in a day. If you do not, you should not perform your normal work activity. So, for writing content or anything, need to concentrate and thinking more and more. But, due to lack of rest, you not do it. For getting good and sound health, must to take reset for certain a period. At least I can say I cannot, If I do not take sufficient sleep, I feel head ache and felling dozy until next sleep.
So, taking sufficient rest very importance for good health and do normal work daily. It is just precondition by health adviser.

My work is all about writing, and so it can get pretty tedious and boring after a while. My eyes start to hurt and I often get headaches if I do not stop every now and then. And whenever I sleep less than 6 hours at night, I tend to be very cranky and sleepy the following day, and in that case I do not end up being very productive, so I try to avoid that as much as possible. I do not manage to rise very early to be honest, so whenever I do, I work more and I take more breaks because otherwise I just break down.

Any resting is very important for out life, health and business too. Sometime we just push and going over the edge, but resting is important. I had situations when i just couldn't find some solution for something even after hours of thinking and researching, but after good rest and relaxing my mind, solution pop up in minutes just like that Can a lack of rest effect you and your writing? It doesn't have to be always sleeping. Could be walking, fishing, listening soe music or anything else that relaxes you and i use all that kind of things as much i can, so i can perform better while i am working

I am bipolar and a drug addict and alcoholic (clean though lol). I also suffer very badly from insomnia, I have to be on medication or I literally don't sleep.

I believe a lot of people don't place enough importance on getting enough rest. I can now see how one bad night's sleep can affect everything I do including my work. I need enough sleep to work productively, to be a good parent, to be a good driver and to keep my mental state in a good condition. If I don't get enough sleep it affects my bipolar which has a huge impact on all aspects of my life.

In short I have to be very careful.

To me, sleep and rest are 2 activities that I cannot miss in the day because I can feel my efficiency dipping when fatigue is setting in. Especially when I am writing, I don't force myself to finish what I had started when I feel tired, worse when I am sleepy. I'd rather take a nap first so my mind is rejuvenated and surely I can give a better performance. That's why I am strict on my bedtime hour at 9 pm, I have to be ready to sleep so my physical condition on the next day is perfect. And whenever I would not have a good night's sleep, I would find a way to take a nap after a lunch to avoid low quality in my output.

I sleep for around 4 hours or low. So that is something affecting my health a lot. And it has resulted in lack of good writing. And also some of the projects being pending. You can see that this has to change. And unless you take some serious action on that front. It'd be not possible for the health to adjust. The sleep needs to be increased. And that seems to be the only way to manage to get back the quality.

No matter what we do in life, there is always the need to rest and that is what is applicable to writing as well. I do not see any reason a writer shouldn't be getting the needed rest so as to relax the mind and body for a better performance as a writer. You always need rest as a writer so that you can write great content for your readers.
