The Evolution of Technology: Robots!

Personally I'm really passionate about technology, and I like to keep myself updated in everything that is related to technology. Day by day technology is evolving and becoming more advanced and making our life easier. We all know that without technology we wouldn’t be here where we are today…I was reading an article about robots, that they can teach each other. Yeah, it sounds cool and this is another big step from technology, but how do they teach each other? Since everything is programmed by humans.

What do you think about those robots?

Let’s discuss…

Well a link to the article you was reading might help pro! lol but they say that technology doubled in speed every year. So while last year they was working on CPU's that could calculate things at around 500ms, next year they will be able to calculate at 250ms and so on and so on until eventually they can calculate things at like 0.01ms. That's about as fast as the human mind can "think" and when they get that fast it means machines will be able to think about things as fast as we do. But you are right in that they have to follow a set of commands and can't "think outside the box" yet. Example, you can't create a thinking computer with detailed files and databases on puppies and then expect it to be able to think about goldfish. It can only do what it's programmed to do.

Although I was reading an article the other day about Google developing a computer program that's capable of learning tasks independently. It's been hailed as a "significant step towards true artificial intelligence". It's called "DeepMind" and was purchased by Google for £400 million in 2014 so you know when they're investing that sort of money into something they can see a real purpose for it.

I think eventually AI is going to advance so much that you'll be able to have a conversation with an AI computer and not know the difference between that and a real person. They will have their own personality and everything. Did you ever see the film HAL from Stanley Kubrick's 2001 a Space Odyssey film? That's sort of what it will get like and eventually, we will have walking talking robots amongst up very much like the Will Smith film iRobot. Except eventually, somewhere along the line, they will inherit the ability to develop feelings and not just thoughts. I know it might sound weird and impossible now but feelings are just words at the end of the day. I mean every feeling you have is described with a word. You feel guilt, remorse, shame. You feel joy, you feel sad or happy or excited. These are just words. But it's the connection that the word implies and eventually, the machines will be able to "feel" the same was as we can now in a sense.

And I also think that eventually, it will be very hard to tell the difference between a human a machine or (AI). They will be walking amongst us, some will have bad teeth and bad B.O (Much like the first terminator did). Almost completely indistinguishable from humans. They will have their own personalities, their own likes and dislikes. Some will be cool, some will be jerks. Some will save lives and some will go rouge and start a criminal underworld of some kind. So just like there are good people and bad people - there will also be good robots and bad robots.

I think we're entering a new era of information technology like we've never seen before. I mean, we have 3D printers than can print out more 3D printers which can then print out more 3D printers. Self assembling and self repairing machines that can clone themselves. It's scary to think about but it's also quite exciting at the same time. Bring on the future it looks pretty cool!

This certainly sounds creepy now, but as technology advances so fast things that seem strange right now become normal very quickly.

I remember getting our first pc and when we first got internet at home. We were one of the first families to do this when I was in school and it was cutting edge stuff. Now 10 year olds are walking around with their own Smartphones chatting to each other online.

It is amazing how fast technology is advancing so fast now. I do think though that I will take a while to adjust to robots walking around, especially if they have feelings and get all touchy and emotional about things!

Robots are pretty amazing The Evolution of Technology: Robots!

Whenever someone talks about the advancement of technology and is referring to robots, I always think about asteroid mining The Evolution of Technology: Robots!

The problem with this is not getting the robots to the asteroids, but getting the material back without turning the asteroid into something that could wipe out the planet or just crash in the ocean lol.

There are something like 150 asteroids at least 150 feet in diameter and most of them contain tons of precious metals. Each asteroid could yield more than 6 billion in profit to anyone who can figure out how to get robots to the asteroids, mine the asteroids, refine the metals and bring them back home.

There was a theory written up by a physicist and he talked about how mining in space could be possible, we just don't have the technology yet. The technology we don't have yet is the AI for the robots in order to work without command.

Here is basically what he talked about:
  • Building robots on earth: We would build the first group of robots on earth and make them the Manager type robots in order to set forth rules. These robots would be doing basically what we'd be doing if we were managing and coding things in space in order to keep the pace of workflow going. We would also need a team of worker robots in order to do the mining. These would only do mining and depositing the ore into a place where the ore was collected. We would also need to have a smelter in space to refine the ore so we could send it home in it's purest form and reduce the cost of transport. We'll also need specialty robots like trash collectors, repair man robots, technician robots, etc. Basically we'd automate a factory, but in space.
  • Sending the robots to space: This is one of the easiest parts for us since we've already done loads of manned missions and unmanned missions to space. I'm not going to talk about this much because all we'd do is load up the robots and shoot them in the sky The Evolution of Technology: Robots!
  • Getting to the asteroids: Some asteroids can be caught up to by just using thrusters and then anchoring to them. If an asteroid was going too fast, we'd have to try and slingshot to the asteroid using a planets mass and gravitational pull.

So after we build the robots, send them to space and get to the asteroid we just have to mine them. That's an easy part as well since we have the technology to build extremely strong drills to get the ore out.

Let's fast forward a bit and talk about what happens when we deplete the first 150 asteroids around earth, what do we do? This is where the real fun begins The Evolution of Technology: Robots! By this time we will hopefully have the technology to have robots build the robots in space. They would need to use the precious metals that were mined from the asteroids to build the robots. So now we have our first crew of robots and a new crew where their only job is to build robots.

So what do we do with the robots who are building robots in space? After enough robots are built, we will then slingshot multiple teams in different directions and have them seek out asteroids that are now near us. Now we have teams going out to mine asteroids and sent back refined precious metals. Each team has a manager, miners, technicians, builders, etc. and can work on their own. Think of it as a virus, it will continually grow due to the builders making new robots whenever they come across precious metals. We don't really know how much is out there. This could just turn into the borg The Evolution of Technology: Robots!

"The first person to figure out how to mine asteroids will instantly become a trillionaire" - Neil deGrasse Tyson

Great stuff Raz! I remember when I was running a 3D printer blog and I came across an article that talked about NASA sending 3D printers to the moon to build 3D printed homes for us we could live in from nothing but moon dust for us before wo got there. Since the process involves crushing, mixing and molding the dust the buildings would be fully airtight and have no seems as well because they're printed from the ground up.

The Technology will see lunar soil layers built up in a pre-determined design.
The System will basically be giant sized 3D printers that build themselves on landing.
It could create curved walls and architecture that is 'exotic' and 'beautiful'.
It could create structures on the moon (and other planets asteroids?) that astronauts and people can live in.
The innovation could have applications in creating simple homes in disaster zones or slum areas also.

The Evolution of Technology: Robots!

The Evolution of Technology: Robots!
Link to that to actual article. Building homes on the MOON.

They think that 90% of the materials they need are already present on the moon. It's just a matter of refining the process with some sample moon dust and building the 3D printers in a way that they can be self-assembled when they land on the moon or even controlled remotely as well of course by satellite.

I personally think that this is definitely going to happen in the next 20 years. And I think that there will be companies that will sell custom designed 3D printed homes on the moon. You can already buy slots of the moon can't you? I remember about 10 years ago when those sites came about you could buy lots on the moon in certain places. Obviously it's only spoof. Although they do send you an official document of ownership lol

Would you like a home on the moon? Remember space travel is taking off big now. Richard Branson's Virgin space flights mean you can already book flights into space. It will only be a matter of time before the very rich and famous start building homes on the moon they can live in in zero gravity.

The only problem is. Living in space in zero gravity is hell for the human body for too long periods. You need to be extremely physically fit and able to withstand a lot of endurance and work out every day because your bone and muscle mass just basically disappears and you end up with really brittle and weak bones. There's also the threat of radiation as there's no atmosphere or magnet pole to reflect the suns harmful UV rays. Also in space, there's no up or down. And there's tiny little bit of liquid in your ear that tells you if you're upside down or not and in space that don't work and takes getting used to.

Also if you spend too long in space you can get the space dementia!

The speed at which technological advancements are happening is simply flabbergasting. If you look back a couple of years you will notice how many things changed and improved. It is something that we need to live with and adapt to. Sometimes it is mindblowing what they manage to come up with, such as what you mentioned. I cannot imagine how robots can teach one another as I am not into the field of robotics at all. However I am concerned that eventually robots may be taking up many human beings' roles, such as at the place of work. That would not be beneficial at all. We need to make sure that technology benefits us not takes over us.

Yes that is my concern too! With robots being able to do almost everything we can do, but most likely be much more efficient and make less mistakes how long would it be before we become redundant? It won't be long until a robot will be much cheaper and less headaches for employers than hiring a person.

Oh yes, I believe they are now rolling out fully unmanned service stations around the world. Well, starting in America where most of these sorts of things happen. Also they already have driverless cars now too. It wont be long until you start seeing them being used mainstream. That will be so weird right!? Would you get in car that was driven and operated by a robot? lol

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

procoder
That would be great Mike! Actually, robots are programmed to be more smarter than people, so definitely i would enter into that car, but with one condition .. robot must have a turn off button, if things get worse... LOL

Ummm I'm not sure how safe I would feel! And oh by the way my husband told me last night that a self driving Tesla recently crashed and killed the "driver" or should I say passenger. He said it is the first incident of a self driving car?

Something went wrong there!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I do not trust them sorry. No matter how highly advanced and smart they say they are I do not think I would ride in such cars. I know that people are prone to mistakes and stupidity while driving, but I cannot feel the inclination of trusting a machine with my life on the road because something could easily go wrong. It is a machine after all.

I agree there. Can you imagine putting your kids in a car driven on autopilot? No never, I don't even let my children get on the school bus! I drive them everywhere.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

procoder
Yeah that is true, driver was there but car was in autopilot mode. However, this technology has its cons and pros, and nothing can't be 100% perfect. Human is smarter than "autopilot mode" but still accidents happen.

Yeah one day EliteWriter they are going to take over even our jobs! They already have bots that can do just about anything they are written to do. Eventually they will be able to write bots that can even write unique articles that make perfect sense but are completely unique and even have personality to them in some way. That could be quite a useful technology to have though. In that, if they could create an intelligence of sort that was able to take a few keywords and then produce incredibly long articles from it that were all completely new and unique and formatted properly like how a real human would do it. I think that's a technology that isn't far behind! What do you think? Would you like a technology like that or do you think it would be far too expensive to buy it?

I think it just takes the human aspect right out of it and I find that rather creepy!

robots will help human, but sometimes robots will take human job. For example waitress's robots, i see it in media about restaurant which employs a robot. It is just my opinion...

Yes what happens when we are completely redundant? Oh dear, what a scary thought.

In the olden days, I saw a documentary that featured Toyota Motors in Japan. In their factory, there were robot arms that handled the baking of the car’s newly painted body. In the assembly line, robot hands were also employed. Now that technology is more advanced, I think the robots are taking over the jobs that are difficult to do. Even the driving of car may soon be relegated to robots that they call autonomous cars which don’t need a human driver anymore. I’m glad that it is happening in my lifetime.
