What is the difference between .com, .net. .org, .gov, .edu?

We know that we have to register domain name with any of that basis of business or website types or purpose. So, we need to register with .com, .net. .org, .gov, .edu high value of domain.

When you will choose with .com, .net. .org, .gov, .edu?

.com-.com domain mainly use for commercial website. If your website with large or small business .com most value for your website.

.Net- This domain very useful for network providers . who business with networking

.Org- This domain name very fit for any organization

.Int- This domain name intend for international organization

.gov- This domain name only content any governmental office or agent

.edu- This domain mainly for all educational institute

Moreover, you can register your domain with your country purpose, if your business not for intentional.

ok so based on the domain we choose what your telling me is that it could make a difference in what people are searching depending on what the main focus is at hand . i always thought domain names were something to organize the different regions or types of Websites that people search for. depending on how common or how something was was organized and what topic or focus was mainly for the web page being searched for example .gov would be federal as too .com would be social and .net would be more like a library and information etc

Yes that is what I originally thought before I started working online, that the extension gave more information about the type or website or the location... but it would seem that the extensions aren't always correct like that. I have seen some strange .org sites that I don't think are non-profit like i would they should be.

Extensions should be used properly as they indicate at a glance what a site could be about. At least it has always worked that way for me. If I see .gov I assume it is related to governmental bodies, and if there is .edu it is related to something educational. However to be honest I find that site names that end in .org and .net are somewhat strange in their concept, as often the former are not always non profit organizations for example. It is a bit difficult to make sure everyone chooses properly I guess but it would be better at least for the perception users get.

Well that's quite a big question Lynne and probably deserves actually being asked on the CD!

What is the difference between .com, .net. .org, .gov, .edu?

I've had this discussion many times with many webmasters on many webmaster forum over the years. Do TLD's matter? Do some TLD's have more authority than others? Well authority is earned through age and backlinks. The more age you have, and the more backlinks you have, the more authority you have. That applies for the whole URL as well as just parts of it. But it's the base URL that is more important than the TLD. Because the TLD is just the same as all the other TLD's out there. So if you're trying to rank for the words "com" forget it! Google ranks words based on their discovery. Since "com" is a word, your new .com will be on the bottom of the pile.

However the base URL (the part before the .com) is what will be looked at first and foremost. It's the first part of your URL so has to be the first thing that's looked at by a search engine since search engines don't read URL's backwards. So the base of your URL part will determine where that site ranks for those keywords (depending on competition). And the TLD won't really play any part in it. I say really because it's not known for sure if Google considers the TLD as a ranking factor or not. And there are some big sites with quirky TLD's that are ranking high for things and are big websites now. Those list of infographic creations sites from earlier as example.

However, .com certainly seems to have the most authority compared to any other TLD. This could be because it was the first TLD before all the other TLDs were even created and there are more of them than any other TLD. But that could also work against it as well. At the end of the day, in todays times, it doesn't really matter what your TLD or your base URL is (although that plays a part). You can still have an authority site regardless to what the TLD extension is.

Yes maybe this merits a discussion thread of its own! I don't know too much about it but I have had a number of people tell me to always choose a .com if possible because it ranks the best.

Yes that is sort of a general rule of thumb to use .com

Because it has the most authority! It's been around the longest and has the most authority and trust factor to it. Unlike all these fancy smancy new fandangled domain extensions that nobody really knows nothing about, .com has been around since the start of the Internet so has the most authority and trust. That is basically why people say to go with the .com if you can where possible. Most sites that rank in the top 10 for any keyword or phrase is a .com.

When they first started with the extensions, the intent was for those last 3 letters to indicate what type of site it was. Mainly, for the sake of uniformity they wanted .gov to indicate government sites, .edu to indicate sites of educational institutions, .org for non-profit organizations, etc.

But when you go to buy a domain name you'll notice they give you a variety of extensions, some even have .info if your site is just going to be an information site, but you're not a government entity or educational institution.

Nowadays I even see .xyz. What's that all about? (O.o) They also use extensions try to indicate what country your site is in like .ph for the Philippines and such like.

In the end, however, I think, if you're doing business, nothing beats a good old (dot)com.

Thanks for sharing the information about domain name directories. This is an added knowledge to me. However, I find some other domain name directories which are not popular like the dot xyz that @cmoneyspinner mentioned. There also the dot tv which perhaps is reserved for tv networks? Anyway, domain names registration is not that simple because you have to know which directory is best for your website.
