Rags to riches doesn't come overnight!

Some years ago, I read that whenever you see an 'overnight' success, that person has usually worked for at least 10 years - putting in the required effort - to get to that spot. Just think about Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, they seemed to break it big out of nowhere. But in reality, both spent years on the Disney Mickey Mouse Club before getting hit music singles of their own.

The same is true of most truly successful online affiliates and marketers; those people had the brains, talent and motivation to keep going and through trial and error finally succeed. And, most times after years of work. It didn't happen overnight, nor was it easy. And, yet newcomers just assume they can read an ebook and 'make it happen!' instantly. They just see another person's success and want instant results, not wanting to devote the effort that went into getting to that point.

Talk to me about your road to success, (whether at affiliate marketing or selling) and some of the obstacles you faced and what advice you have for the newcomer who wants 'instant success'.

There is no 'overnight success'. Most of successful people have a long story behind their success, but they get noticed by large mass of people only when they get popular or reach. Specially in online marketing, there is more and more competition day after day, maybe more then in offline businesses. BUT for serious and hard working people who want to learn quickly, learn from others, learn from failures and succeed no matter what happen, success will come for sure. Success is impossible only for "quitters" who don't have enough patience to fight for success.

I am always willing to share my experience which can be "shortcut" to success, but it's not promise that shortcut will cut off few years out of your path to success. I am working hard last 15 years and there is yet more to accomplish to final success i am imagining.

Problem is that most of people and beginners rather read about "overnight success" then accepting truth about longer process, so they fail sooner and quit without any success. So, my final advice is first to start somewhere, try many things, test your self, learn from other people's success and failures. Never give up! If success is your final destination, just go all the way, no matter how hard it can be!

You are so right! Many people think that they can get rich and successful overnight. It takes a lot of work and effort in reality, and I know this from personal experience. I started off writing for someone else and they paid me low rates. This was not just a bit degrading but it could have been demotivating if I allowed it to. But I did not. I was willing to keep going and learn and gain experience, and even though the income was low, it was something at least. Now after 8 years I can say that I have achieved more than I hoped for. So I am proud of myself for not giving up.

Very true. 99.9% of the time anyway. There are people that do "get lucky" overnight with a website idea they had which they launched and it went viral overnight. Do you remember the "send your enemy glitter" website? That small website idea went viral and he ended up with like 100k orders in about 3 days. I think eventually he sold the site on Flippa or something for a nice handsome profit. So it CAN happen overnight. If you have an idea for something and put that idea in place, and that idea is unique, fortune often has a way of favoring the brave. After all the saying goes "fortune favors the brave".

I remember when mobile phone recycling first kicked off. About 9 years ago now! But back then, I had I started 2 .info websites (which are still up today) which dominated the #1st place result in Google for 2 very big keywords. Because I was about the first site to write about these keywords (I'd write reviews of all the different mobile recycling programs at that time), my sites dominated the SERPs and I was pulling in around £1k per day from them. I was using Webgains as an affiliate but I was earning through Adsense as well. Eventually it started dying down and the big boys Envirofone and Mazuma mobile were dominating it so I sold my sites and "got out early" so to speak. I invested that in my home now for which I'm still paying the mortgage but the point is, that happened virtually overnight for me out of pure luck. It was only from a rubbish Blogspot blog that it all started as I had something on it about recycling mobile phones and Google was ranking it high and I was getting all this traffic and basically went from there.

But generally speaking, it doesn't happen overnight. It can, but that's as rare as frog hair! Usually it takes a lot of time, a lot of blood, sweat and tears, a lot of nights up late wayy past your bedtime and making sacrifices. Going without so you can get ahead in some way. That and believing in yourself, believing in your dream and business idea. Overcoming hurdles and obstacles. Being all you can be.

I believe there are still many many opportunities out there which can make you successful overnight. But like diamonds, they are often covered by mountains of dirt. And you'll have to do a lot of diggin', a lot of dirt removal before you're able to find that diamond in the rough. Rags to riches doesn

Yeah i remember "send your enemy glitter"... Yet we don't know if there were some failures before they tried that. And you are right, overnight success is not absolutely impossible, but it's rare (luck) like winning big money on lottery

Long term, not one-off success is built on hard experience, trial and error, brains, determination, good marketing plan and a bunch of other factors but of course good luck and timing plays a role too.

Ideally if you find a brilliant thinker and strategist for your new site, someone with experience to back up those ideas, then you can propel your company to the stars!

Not that you can't have an instant success with a website, but usually the person/company behind that site has been in business a lot longer than 3 days- if only at other sites and the knowledge and experience they bring to that one website (which becomes instantly famous) didn't happen in 3 days.

There is a similar situation in gaming, where a ten year veteran of that specific game, starts a new account and maxes it out (XP and level wise) in one or two months, where as it takes an average new person to the game ten years to max out just one account. The experience brought to the game allows that veteran game player the knowledge of how to most efficiently train to maximum level.

And, the same is true in most business situations.

But, i do agree that some people are just amazingly lucky (or blessed) to be able to find instant niches and know how to recognize and cash in on those opportunities. Another person without such a keen eye could see those same niches and walk right by.

When I started I didn't profit for the first 4 years Rags to riches doesn

Now, I did make some money, but I never profited from any of my sales. I would always be investing more than I was making Rags to riches doesn

I saw my first 4 years as earning my online marketing degree haha Rags to riches doesn The only difference is that I was learning as I worked. When you're in college you learn and then you have a huge amount of bills to pay off while you look for a job. I think I chose the right choice by doing a pay as you go plan with the self taught internet marketing courses. I would browse forums and popular blogs in order to know what works and what didn't I started out doing adsense and quickly getting banned because I thought I could just buy 1,000,000 visitors and make $1,000 a day hahaha Rags to riches doesn But now I know what to do and what not to ;)

When I started to make some money it was because I had one of those AHA! moments and I capitalized on it. This was back when you could build 100,000 links and increase in the search engines pretty easily because certain link types weren't devalued compared to other links. I started my SEO service because I knew what to do and knew how to bring in enough traffic to make my first few sales. I was pushing my website pretty hard through adwords and I was spending, without worry, $100 a day on my clicks and I was making $500 to $1,000. After my first year of this I was banned on adwords, but I had all that capital to invest in other ventures.

If I could go into the past and talk to myself I would say:
  • Don't rely on one revenue source because if you lose it, you're screwed. Get one source profitable and semi automated, then move on to another project to try and build that up. Just don't forget about your first venture that is currently making you money.
  • Don't get complacent. Always be innovating because if you aren't, your competition is.
  • Build good relationships with people in the same field, they will probably help you out in the long run.

I think a lot of people wanting to make money online are so brainwashed by money making websites that say you can basically get rich quick if they use their program. And that so many used their program to get rich, basically overnight. However, in the real world doesn't occur too often, and as the author stated, it takes years to grow, and learn.

I wouldn't want to become rich overnight, or a viral success overnight. I have no idea how I could process that, and I'm not too sure if i'll be able to do that. It would seem so stressful, especially if I was just starting out. I think people need to gradually build their success so they can have time soak in information and process it. Usually overnight successes don't often last, and they all eventually fade away. However, successes that took years upon years usually stick.

I've heard about those viral sensations too, such as the Youtube baby blowing a bubble from his nose or cuddling a dog or something else and it just blows up big and the person posting it becomes insta-famous and makes a lot of money. And, that kind of thing is like you said, not the most ideal way for it to happen. If you have not 'earned' that success, then how will you deal with it emotionally or even financially? Those people who get the 'one off' kind of luck can't replicate it to save their lives. Lasting success is built on trial and error, not one offs.

Yes I agree with you on that. There seems to be a general perception that whoever works online is taking the easy way out and managing to be his own boss and be really successful and rich in no time. That is not the case at all. Hard work and plenty of effort is needed, and one cannot just give it a shot, and expect a miracle to happen.

Yes I agree with what everyone has said here. Success takes hard work, time and effort. Often it involves failing a lot of times and trying again despite those failures.

I think you need to be like a dog with a bone and keep at it. If you try something that doesn't work pick yourself up and try something else. One day this will pay off, but if you fail and decide not to try again... well then you can just keep working for a boss for the rest of your life right?

I have made plenty of mistakes in my life. With work and in my personal life but I keep getting back up. I always work hard and I keep a positive attitude when times are good and when times are bad. I am always striving to be better even if I am good at something. I love learning and trying new things.

It is starting to pay off now. I am starting to see small successes building up into bigger ones and it is amazing to be on this journey.

One of the reasons for newcomers to strive for the "24 hour rags to riches, without any effort" kind of things are often due to the actual ebook they've read or just the sales page for a product they found. The titles are often such as "$2400 earned in 4 hours" etc. And that's tempting, I give them that. Heck, it might even be 100% true, in one way. However, all the work up until those 4 hours are never mentioned in the sales page.. I wonder why? .. Because that's like a big fat stop sign and most potential buyers will still be just that, potential buyers. They won't buy the product if the title says "$2400 earned in only 4 hours. 5 years of hard work is the key! Want in?", and why should they?

You need to sell your product for what it is. Not for what you want it to be. And the same goes for you as a buyer, when you're buying it. Buy the product for how it is, and not for your unrealistic goals you're trying to achieve.

Success in any endeavor is sweet but usually not easily achieved. I agree that there is no such thing as an overnight success as related by successful businessmen. The richest person in our country had experienced several failures and it took him many years to build his empire of malls. And I remember the failures of Abraham Lincoln before he became president of the United States. That’s a lesson for us when you embark on a business that you need patience and perseverance. It is better to have a timeline of your goal and don’t rush yourself with success.

I agree . The road to sucess is long and hard. However 10 years ? I hope not. There is a shot cut to sucess. Mentorship!Someone can guide you to use their systems and make profit without making the same mistakes they did. Look at people like Robert Kiyosaki who had Rich Dad as his mentor. He now mentors people on how to invest in real estate.
