Just out of interest where do you work? Do you work from home or from an external office? If you work from home do you have a separate office?
How do you separate your work life and your personal life?
Just wondering as my hubby and I want to move soon, perhaps even buy a house. I think having a separate room as my office is vital... he seems to think not.

Yeah that's another downside to it. I guess it's like most things in life, they all have their upsides/downides, pros & cons, advantages/disadvantages. One of them is having to get up in the small hours and travel to your office either in your own car, or even possibly by bus or train. And if it's raining and you forget your umbrella ella ella ah ah ah. Well you get wet! :P

As much as I love working in the big comfy chair in my livingroom with my laptop, sometimes I just have to go to my room and shut the door for peace and quiet while I'm working, as the noise from stampeding kittens all over the house gets too much. They like to jump on the back of my chair behind my head and run over the chair arms. Only one will sit still and cuddle with me while I work. :)

Yes anweb that is the life! That is the dream and you're living it! That's one the best things about freelancing. You're your own boss. You can wear what you want and work where you want. If that means sitting in your garden with nothing but a pair of y fronts on then so be it! :D

But if I were to buy a new house I would surely consider it. Explain to your hubby that it is important to work in peace and quiet as you get to concentrate more and be more efficient. In the case you will not use it anymore, it can still be used as a study room for your kids when they grow older.
Oh yes, I wish I had the option of having my very own office. Unfortunately I cannot as it is not feasible to devote a room for that only. So I work in the kitchen/living area among all the noise :( But if I were to buy a new house I would surely consider it. Are you sick with a cold, or are you cold in bed? I'm glad im not the only person who sits down at their couch to work.. I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to, it's awfully comfortable and convenient. :D

I mean winter is setting in and it is cold so the best place for me is in bed where it is warmest. Comfy and warm, it beats the couch in winter by a long shot.

Oh I can't wait until my kids let me work a bit more when they are home. Sometimes I just have to get something urgent done and it is often completely impossible. When they are bigger it will be easier I am sure! They are 2 and 4 now, so they need quite close supervision or they get up to all sorts :)

So for me, atm, my office is my room. I'm usually chilling in my room anyway either watching tele or listening to some music or something but usually as my desktop PC is in my room, I'm in my room working on it. I do have an office at home as well. Well actually, it's what used to be my garage that was converted into a room complete with on-suite bathroom too for when someone in my family stays over on special occasions or something. Well so that's been converted into an office complete with office desk, swivel chair, fan and what not. I mean, you could work in there as your office but it's a little cold and doesn't have all the soft furnishing and comforts that my actual room does.
Plus this means I don't actually have to travel to my office and back home again everyday essentially avoiding the "rat race", rush hour traffic, angry and hungry drivers and everyone else trying to get to work on time or get home for their dinner at the end of the day. I've done that for years before and it kinda gets depressing after a while you end up feeling like you're stuck in the system or something. Just another statistic you know?
So if you can buy a new home that has a spare room in it that you can use as an office, that would be better than renting out an office that you'd only have to pay for anyway thus eating away at your profits. But there are some plus sides to renting an actual office. It does keep your work and living life separate and it can mean you have an address where business stuff goes to and your own address as well which you might not want to give out for business reasons. But you can always rent a PO Box address for that anyway with mail forwarding.
