What if you had to suddenly leave? What about your buyers?

What if you had to suddenly leave? What about your buyers?

It's all well and good to talk about suspending your services if you have to go on a 'planned' vacation. But, what about times when you are called away from the house/computer on an emergency? Then you would not have time to do anything more than shut off the computer and deal with real life.

Emergencies happen in real life and you just have to drop everything and deal with them, even if that means walking off and coming back later to pick up the pieces.

As an SEOClerks seller or freelancer, do you have a contingency plan to deal with emergencies that require you to be away for an extended period of time?

Well someone mentioned previously that it would be nice to have an option to "shut shop" if for example you are going away on holiday or in an emergency.

I think this would be a great feature, then if there is an emergency you could just click on "shut shop", maybe have an option to add in a message or reason why so your customers know what is happening. Customers could get really annoyed to find they can't access their supplier... but if there is a message like "Hit by truck, in hospital, be back soon!" well then they wouldn't be annoyed!

I agree I think this would be the perfect solution to those times when you might need to step out for whatever reason be it an emergency that's come up or something else some pressing engagement that you need to attend to. The only other current alternative is to put an status update on your profile to say that you're currently away for x reason until x time. You can also choose to email this to your followers as well but not everyone such as those people not following you, will see it. The times they might is when they're not getting a response in time and decide to check out your profile and then possibly see your latest update to say why you're away or when you'll be back. But there may be times when you don't know when you'll be able to get back to your office or computer so being able to prevent all services from being ordered until you're ready and able to work on them again would minimize the amount of people who order and get annoyed and upset that you're not responding to it in time. I think some people would still rather take the order though even if they couldn't work on it right away but I'd prefer not to take the order and not upset them than take it and try and do it later but each to their own!

Yes Mike, that is exactly how I feel, I would also prefer not to take orders if for some reason I can't get to orders for a while.

I had a similar problem when I had to give birth to my baby and I had an online store, I was very stressed out about it. Eventually I just put a pop up on the website saying the store is closed for 2 weeks.

Yes I literally took 2 weeks off to have a c-section LOL and then I was working again full time with my baby with me. The things you have to do when you have your own business....

If I suddenly had to leave for some emergency reason that I didn't know about was going to happen, depending on the emergency, I don't think I would do anything to tell anyone at first as my first priority would be about dealing with the emergency. Whether that involved getting to the scene as fast as I could or something else. In some cases, my clients would be the last thing on my mind. Especially if it was an emergency with someone in my family or something. I would rather deal with or attend to that first and then when I have I would think that I suppose it's time that I updated my current clients to let them know that I wont be able to deliver their order on time if that was the case and I didn't have the time to do so. I value my clients and buyers and want to keep them happy, but sometimes in life some things are just much more important you know? And people are people and often understand that people need to do what people need to do in times of an emergency.

So I don't have any contingency plan so to speak, I just deal with things as they happen most times for things like this. I would start to think about it at some point though and would get around to updating my current clients and telling any new clients that order my services here about my current situation and to let them know that I might not be able to deliver their work in time and give them the chance to cancel if they wish. But I'd probably only do that if I really knew that the emergency or whatever was going to take up a lot of my time. Otherwise I probably wouldn't say anything if I could still comeplete the order as some things in life are on a strict need to know basis and when it comes to your own problems, people have enough of those on their own so don't want to hear and know about yours too! Well some do. What if you had to suddenly leave? What about your buyers?

Yes Mike I know what you mean!

When my daughter was 6 months old I took her to the doctor for a cough and a bit of flu... he took one look at her and shouted for his assistant to book a bed in hospital and for another assistant to bring in a nebulizer. OMG it was scary.

Within 20 minutes she was in a hospital bed and I had to call my husband out from work to bring us nappies and milk and some spare clothes. I stayed there until the following night when my hubby took over. The last thing that came to my mind was orders that had to go out!

I have to mark that as the scariest moment ever in my life. She was in hospital for a week! Luckily my business is mommy related so when I explained to the mommies why their orders were late they were all amazing about it.

I have experienced this. I had a bunch of orders in queue and due to personal reasons I had to go. My deliveries where being flagged as late and no matter how much I cared about my deliveries, my clients and my business, I just couldn't handle it at that time.

What I did, when I came back, (I think I was gone for 3 days and I had 24 hour deliveries), was to deliver all my orders, told my clients about what had happened and I offered all of them a refund (mutual cancellation) even though I already delivered everything.

I actually do remember this as it was yesterday.. Only one out of all my clients went with the refund option. That's more than acceptable.

Best Regards,
hitmeasap

Yeah that's a good idea. It shows good willing on your behalf and that you're much more about providing a good service than you are just taking their money and people recognize that and respect you for it. Most times, the buyer will want the work though rather than a refund and are happy to wait a little longer for it if they know they're going to get it rather than just take a refund and then have to find and buy that service somewhere else or from someone else. I've had cases like that in the past where I was going to be late for some reason and told them about it and the reason why and that and most people are happy with that and happy to wait until you can deliver it rather than accepting a refund and having to find, and buy it elsewhere. Most of the times like this it's simply about keeping them in the loop and letting them know what's going on. Communication goes further than just communicating you know? What if you had to suddenly leave? What about your buyers?

That was a great thing to do and in such circumstances it is probably the best option. You cannot forget your family and other commitments from your personal life. In that way you reconciled both responsibilities nicely and in a very good way. I will keep it in mind if it should happen to me.
That is why it would be great to have someone to help you out. But most of us are willing to take up all the work on our own just so as not to sacrifice the quality, at least this has always happened with me.

That is nice to hear that almost all your customers were supportive and nice about the situation. I think that once you have built up a good customer base with regular return customers and you have good customer relationships with them then this is the result.
I also had some difficulties with my online store once with my daughter landing up in hospital and my customers (all mommies) were great about it. There were also some shorter periods of time too with sick children and each time my customers were great about it. That is the great side about the niche I am in!

If time allows, then I will outsource it to other freelancers so they can do it for me. In an emergency, I don’t mind giving all the profits to the freelancer I outsource it to because keeping clients happy is more important than earning money today as they will more likely to return and give me more business. This is the best option as you won’t risk losing potential customers. However, if this is not possible, then the only thing I would do is refund the money and cancel the job. This is a very bad idea though as chances are, they won’t return.

Well.. we are human after all and everything can happen, but If i’m planning to go on holidays the first thing that I need do is to notify all my customers. Personally, even when I'm on holidays my computer is always with me, so I always will find the time to do what I love to do(Freelancing). One thing is sure, I'll be available even the day of my marriage What if you had to suddenly leave? What about your buyers?

available on day of you marriage??? Are you kidding me What if you had to suddenly leave? What about your buyers? Kick your but your self, before bride do it. What if you had to suddenly leave? What about your buyers?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's dedication Abid! Weddings can be expensive though so I can understand it. I guess it all depends on how big your wedding is and what you're doing on the day. Most wedding receptions I've been to you're usually sitting around for a few hours eating dinner and using your phone anyway so as long as you're not doing things that are time consuming like just updating people on what you're doing and when you'll be back and things like that would be fine. Just stuff you can do on your phone you know. But if you was full working away on your laptop/netbook or something then that would be pretty bad on your wedding day! But I guess it all just depends on how big the day is, how important and special it is to you and whether you value your clients and business's integrity so much so that even getting married or wild horses couldn't stop you! What if you had to suddenly leave? What about your buyers?

Ok, just to clarify something... the last part of being available on my "marriage" day, is to show how much i care about my job. Also, no one else know better than me which is the most important day in my life. Wedding it's not everyday...freelancing yes.

Hi Bev thanks for open a question for a such and real issue. Yes! I want to say as like procoder after all we are human. We have to do lot of things out freelancing. We have family and we have to do various emergency work in our life race out of freelancing. So, sometimes we cannot shut all job in proper time and it may take sometimes more from real timeline. I think it should be understandable as a human being. And personally I faced some of my client they do not want to understand even my sickens or religious holiday. For that, I have no suggestion and only refund is solution. Again, if you real human being, you have to have quality to understand other problem.
And my suggestion, SEOclerks has to add a new featured like service status, what is going on with seller? Than upcoming buyer can easily understand.

Thanks by Ajlancer

It is already problematic to deal with orders and buyers when you need to go out for an errand or for a vacation believe me, because what happens is that some buyers just keep contacting you even though I inform them beforehand. Some people understand that we are humans with families, but others don't. If an emergency happens or I have other important family commitments I inform clients and let them now when I will be back. I do not mind that if they cannot wait they hire someone else as since I handle all orders on my own so I cannot give the work to anyone else.
