Are all link building tools bh tools and does Google see all automated link building as bh?

Link development, backlink building, whatever you call it. It's SEO. You're building links to SEO your site. But are all links built equal? Does using an automated link building tool to automate your link building in anyway make you a bh in the eyes of Google?

Some people say when it comes to using tools like senuke, xrumer, gsa, scrapebox etc to build links with that it's only how you use these tools that makes them bh tools or how you use them that makes you a bh SEO.

I get that some tools are a part of doing SEO such as page analyzers, metric checkers, or even spreadsheets is a tool of some kind but these don't build links for you. I'm talking about any software program that builds or creates links for you of any kind.

What's Google's view on using automated software program tools to build links with and does it consider all tools that build links for you automatically, bh tools? Or is it really the way you use it that makes them or you bh?

I personally think that not all link building tools are bh and that using one to automate some link building task for you isn't bh either. I think that these tools can be used to do bh link building with. But they can also be used responsibly too. I think they get a bad name because people use them badly and Google knows how powerful backlinks can be and don't want people to use tools like these to build links with in any way shape or form. But if you don't use a tool to do it with, you outsource it to a freelancer or SEO firm. And that doesn't make you a bh to do that either. Either that or you do it yourself manually by hand. Does that mean that is white hat SEO though? So seeing as you can still do bh SEO by hand. You can also do white hat SEO with a tool.

Or is the way Google sees it different and it sees any tool or program that builds links for you using a bot like method as bh?

What do you think / know about this?

On the Google Webmaster Guidelines, it doesn't say anything about using tools only not to participate in link schemes and not to use "Automatically generated content". But it doesn't actually say anything about Automatically generated links does it?

I disagree with that. Else Google would call all SEO bh SEO. But there is quite clearly a distinction between white hat and bh SEO. And where does it say that on the Google Webmaster Guidelines? Is that something that Google have said somewhere? Otherwise if not that is only your opinion and not necessarily the one that Google would adopt unless I can hear or read it said directly from the horses mouth. Not that I'm discrediting your word!

Also what about when you write a press release or submit a comment on a blog? Is that considered bh SEO then? Or would it only be bh SEO if I was to buy some software that could submit my PR to PR sites for me and comment on blogs for me? Would that be bh? I mean, blog commenting in itself isn't bh (Even Matt Cutts says he does it). Is writing and submitting a press release to some free PR sites bh whether you're doing it manually or with a tool? I think it's a really tricky one to say because using a tool doesn't always mean you're doing bh with it. Some just help you keep tracks of which sites you have an account on just like a web browser does. I guess you could say that not all tools are bh. But you think that all and any links you create yourself is bh?

I believe automatically generated content is link building tools, and therefore may be blackhat. Google is not very precise in their terms, in accordance with blackhat methods such as automatization. What exactly is autogenerated content in Google's eyes anyway?

This is very interesting and not something I know much about. All I know is when I first started working online I kept finding articles that told me that the best way to get ranked was to get backlinks for my websites. It was a while before I started learning about quality links and that backlinks can be detrimental to your website if done incorrectly.

I have been told by numerous people that using any software to create backlinks is very dangerous for SERP and will put you are risk. I have been told to build links naturally myself. But geez this does take some doing doesn't it?

Someone mentioned grey hat techniques. Somewhere inbetween black hat and white hat.

I have read in several discussions that using black hat tool can be susceptible to penalties by Google. To be honest, I am not well-versed with black hat but my understanding is it’s using tools for the automated spreading of backlinks. That may mean to be like a bot that does the work for you so Google does not tolerate it. The reason perhaps is the proliferation of backlinks all over the internet.
