Swollen toe

I have a swollen toe that hurts to even walk on. It could be gout I am not sure. It is red and swollen. Do I go to the doctor and have him tell me it is nothing to worry about?

I would go to the doctor and see what he or she says. Has the redness gone away or the swelling?

Gout is TERRIBLE and very difficult to get rid of. My Father has been battling Gout for months. He keeps going on medications that do help him, however it just keeps coming back. It's very painful! To such point, it literally throws my Dad off his feet until the medications take hold.

At one time, my toes would become swollen due to infection. I am not sure what was causing the infection. However, to get relief, I would soak my feet in very warm water with dissolved salt and it was the only thing that would take down the swelling. For sure, see your doctor as there could be many causes of swollen feet or toes, including a link to diabetes. Take care and please let us know how you are now.

Wear open toed sandals or go bare foot and avoid stubbing your sore toe against anything. Take some meds to bring down the swelling as that is caused by your body's attempt to get fight infection, as when white blood cells die it causes a swelling in the area. Strengthen your immune system also to defend your body against invaders.

Beverly I have salt water before and it does work like a charm for things. Plus it is very relaxing on the feet.

At one time, my toes would become swollen due to infection. I am not sure what was causing the infection. Epsom salts are great for anything like that. Whether it's in your bath water or soaking your feet. If you have hives, or really itchy skin Epsom salts with some finely ground oatmeal is awesome.

Epsom salts are great for anything like that. Whether it's in your bath water or soaking your feet. If you have hives, or really itchy skin Epsom salts with some finely ground oatmeal is awesome.

My son gets irritated skin on occasion. So I might try this idea to see if it will clear up his skin condition. I am hoping it does not come to taking him to the dermatologist, though that might be our only option.

One colleague had the same problem before. Her toe was very red and obviously swollen. When she went to the doctor, it was discovered that there was pus inside which was caused by a small wound. And that small wound was due to an ingrown nail. She admitted that she was ignoring the pain of the ingrown nail but she didn't think that it can progress into something like that. It was like a minor operation that was painful because anesthesia have no effect when there is pus in the toe. After removing the ingrown nail, it took 2 days before she could walk normally again.

You really need to visit the doctor once you discover you have such issues. The reason is that it is going to help the doctor ascertain first hand the type of treatment to administer to you before the issue gets worse.

Well, actually really late for this post, but anyway a swollen toe is a nightmare. Every time you walk or move your foot in any way, you feel like you want to take your toe off. Hope that this guy had made it to the doctor, did some X-rays, and checked what was wrong. Usually when this happens, and if you don't have an specific cause, you have to go to the doctor and check it up, because it can be something related to blood circulation, or rheumatic disease, or maybe a dislocation.
