Limits on public broadband in 20 states. Is your state on the list?

Big broadband companies are fighting back hard against cities that choose to provide free and low cost wifi and internet service. This could mean private internet service providers can maintain their high priced services even longer. And, though this means more money for big business, it could limit the chances of lower income families having access to the internet and job or educational opportunities.

Internet should be free for everyone and it will be eventually. About 15 years ago I downloaded about 20 music tracks from Napster, my dad was very pissed off because of 200$ internet bill. 12 years ago we started paying 60$ per month to have unlimited access to internet with slow connection. Now I pay about 30$ per month to have unlimited connection + 40$ for unlimited internet connection on mobile phone. Connection is getting faster and prices continue to drop. My bet is that in 10-15 years from now, most of cities in the modern world will have free access to internet.

Of course big companies are butthurt because they want to charge money for internet and all the investments (fiber, cables...) will eventually have no use. Big companies will lobby as much time as they can against free internet, same with electric transportation and everything.

Free internet is a powerful educational tool as it gives access to a world of learning online for children and adults. Sometimes, these people would not have access to adequate learning resources offline, especially those living in remote towns where a local library is rare.
