Google treats a sub domain as a unique site, just like the domain. Think of Blogger.com which has millions of subdomains. Each subdomain is treated differently in Google, some ranking highly and others barely getting Google's notice.

Sub Domain and domains are completly different for example:
a domain would be: website.com
a Subdomain would be : website.randomname.com or subdomain.website.com

A sub?domain is a domain that is part of a larger domain name. DNS hierarchy consists of the root-level domain at the top, underneath which are the top?level domains, followed by second?level domains and finally sub?domains.

Google treats a sub domain as a unique site, just like the domain. Think of Blogger.com which has millions of subdomains. Each subdomain is treated differently in Google, some ranking highly and others barely getting Google's notice.

Even the blogs on wordpress.com are considered subdomains. Another good example is when a site hosts it's photos or videos on a subdomain. This allows for bandwidth to be saved on the main site or at least so the pages on the main site are not heavy or laggy when the site visitor tries to visit.

A subdomain is a prefix to a domain, like subdomain.example.com. Each subdomain acts as it's own unique website. Usually they are all linked together to expand an entire website. This is unlike a sub-directory, with is a suffix of a domain, like example.com/subdirectory. Subdirectories are where groups of files for a website is stored, showing different content for one website... Like seoclerks.com/forum ----- It's showing the forum section of seoclerks.com... On Tumblr you get your own subdomain blog. This would be a prime example of subdomains. This site is part of the collective but stands alone in search engines. And, though you can expect some benefits from posting on subdomains which originate from highly respected sites such as blogger and Tumblr, you will still need to do SEO and content creation for your own site to reap any search engine benefit.

Your example is a sub directory, which is different than a sub domain.

And, many times it's just easier to organize all your files in a subdomain directory than in a sub folder on a main site. This is usually done for blogs and news sites or where a site wants to limit the SEO damage that a user could have on the main site. Such as was done with Hubpages, where all the authors have their own subdomain.

subdomain is a part of a main domain and domain is the standalone domain. For example, wordpress.com is the domain, whereas mysite.wordpress.com is a subdomain. Subdomain does not have independent existence even though it is treated as a separate website, when the domain is deleted the subdomain will also be deleted. If your hosting company allows to have subdomain, you can create numerous subdomains on your main domains and have websites on different niche.
