What is the difference between domain registrar and registry?

Is a domain registrar the same as a domain registry? Please explain the difference.

Registries are an index for the domain names, ensuring that any given domain name can be used only once.

Whereas, registrars are responsible for maintaining the registration details for a
domain name including information about the owner of the domain name.

Domain name owners can't directly interact with the registry, so they maintain their contact details through the registrar who updates the registry on behalf of the domain name owner.

So in this way, the registrar is the middle man in this transaction.

Registry: A domain name registry is an organization that manages top-level domain names. They create domain name extensions, set the rules for that domain name, and work with registrars to sell domain names to the public. For example, ICANN manages the registration of .com domain names and their domain name system (DNS).

Registrar: The registrar is an accredited organization, like Thewebpole.com, that sells domain names to the public. Some have the ability to sell top-level domain names (TLDs) like .com, .net, and .org or country-code top-level domain names (ccTLDs) such as .us, .ca, and .eu.

Domain registry is just like the Coca cola Company and domain registrar is just like walmart. When you want to buy a coca cola, you have to go to walmart, you cannot buy from Coca cola from he Coca cola Company. However, coca cola is supplied to the walmart by he Coca cola Company.
Domain registries supply domains to the domain registrar and domain registers make the domains available to the public.
