Should I create a Youtube Channel intro?

On some Youtube channels that I visit, they have an intro video that summarizes what the channel is about. Usually the clip is ten to fifteen seconds, not very long but includes basic info on the channel content and/or it's creator. Is this really a good idea? And, if so, what should I include into the video to make it appealing.

The only purpose I can think of for this type of video would be to post it to your blog or Google+ page as an enticement to get more subscribers to your channel.

If you could create this video and then pin it to your Youtube channel, then it would make more sense than simply creating the video and having it as one of the many you are suffering.
