So far, I have not seen any banner advertising or partner ads on Pinterest. How is Pinterest earning money?

From what I gathered, the owners of Pinterest are young billionaires because of the high earnings of Pinterest. And their revenue comes from their specialized advertising called promoted pins. It seems that those promoted pins are paid advertisements that Pinterest promotes in their site. Now I am wondering why there is an impression that Pinterest has no ads in their site when, in fact, their site is earning so much money from the promoted pins that stays on top.
