301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to another , for ex: www.yoursite.com/oldsite to www.yoursite.com/newsite.

Why we do ?

Moving to a new domain (firs-web.com to second-web.com)
To clean dynamics URLS + redirecting them to shorter search engine friendly versions
To Prevent duplicate content problems which is caused by www and non www -versions.
