Can blog spam hurt your search engine ranking?

Does blog spam have a negative impact on search engine ranking? Is there some type of penalty from Google?

It just makes sense that Google would penalize a site that has lots of spam on the comment section. After all, most times, these blog spam comments will be linking to illegal sites. And, Google doesn't like it when you are linking to or from 'low rent' web properties.

Is the blog spam you are saying refers to blog comments? I have yet to see a blog with spam comments although I know that it is a natural occurrence with the countless of spammers around us. If ever I see a blog with lots of spam comments then the impression I get is a neglect of that blog. Like a forum, you should be monitoring the contents if there are spam or garbage in the contents.
