Broken links are those links on your site, which refer to those page which doesn't exist, and comes with some error like 404 or Server error.
If your site's home page contain like "www.kjafhahkafhkffds.com" , and it is not exist, then it is broken link.
This type of links may cause of go down your site on SERP. So remove it's existence as soon as possible if it is indexed by Google.

A broken link is a link that doesn't work, often resulting in an error page.
A broken link happens when the link points to a web page that has been deleted or moved.
