The only reference I could find on Google for FFA as pertaining to SEO is for 'free for all' pages. More than anything FFA pages are link dumps, unmoderated so that anyone can submit a link to any site even if it's not related to the other links or content on the page. For that reason, FFA pages are not really a good choice for backlinking as you want all your backlinks to be coming from pages with similar content as yours.

Do NOT use free for all. Not only can you receive a penalty for linking to those sites, they are a PAIN to try to remove. Those sites set themselves up knowing they are seen as bad by Google, and then ask you to pay to remove a link from them. What a scam!
