Should you put the blog on a sub-domain?

Is it important to put the blog on your primary domain (such as on a subfolder) or can you put it on a sub-domain of your main site and still reap SEO benefit?

Blog with unique domain can get rank easily. But within a website you cna put the blog easily on a sub domain based because blog is also a part of a website.

If your website is a company website, you can use subdomain to blog about news and events. You can also use blog section to let people express, for example you can use sub domain as a forum. If you have a subdomain, you can run a forum script on the subdomain and wordpress on main domain, you will have two different website within the same domain. The best way to use a subdomain is by using it as a foum or blog.
