Google just did an update. They are constantly changing things.

The new things in SEO is the last panda refresh #24 on january 17, the authorship ranks though it is yet to be announced, The techniques like Link Wheel, Link Baiting etc and increasing use of Web 2.0 Properties for websites, Constant changing algorithms to make google search better and stricter etc are some of the new things in the SEO as far as I have Known yet.

SEOMoz reported that a new thing is coming, called co-citation. Basically it devalues anchor tags as backlinks and focuses more on the words in the paragraphs surrounding the link as an indicator of what the site being linked to is about. Some sites that are not specifically targeting keywords are ranking well for them (such as open site explorer) because other sites are using keyword descriptive paragraphs/text to describe those sites. Sometimes the sites are linked to, sometimes not. The main point is to brand your site's name out there and associate with keywords with or without anchor tag backlinks (a regular HTML backlink may work).
