Use a program or manually sign up to the forums - add urls w/ anchors (or whatever structure you prefer) to website area & signature, etc. Make a few posts, rinse repeat , better if you have a program to auto complete the process but I do everything manual so its not the only way :P

I hear ya about taking to much time - But its the only way to really be sure its done right & you are not going to get sandboxed in your niche... then its all for nothing ya know
If you do engage in blackhat backlinking be sure to be extremely diverse and only do small shots at a time, never blast 100k+ links at ANY site at ANY time -- this is never natural and chances are less than .001% will index after its said and done so it only hurts ya after a certain point.
