How often do you try to get a backlink?

Do you actively seek backlinks such as with an organized backlinking campaign? Or, do you only casually seek a backlink such as if you are already reading a blog post and then happen to leave a blog comment with your site backlink? Which technique is working best for you to get backlinks?

If I can get a backlink on a site, then I will. But I don't really think too much about it as many of my backlinks come from my friends in blogging who are linking to my posts.

Whenever possible, I will get a backlink assuming it's allowed on that website to do so. No reason to try for a signature backlink if it will just be removed quickly.
