What is the difference between SEO and Link Building?

SEO and Link building are often considered two different activities; but really they're related. And, actually link building is a common practice done as a larger part of the SEO picture; when trying to improve one's position in search engines.

Though, link building is often seen as a manipulative SEO practice where by the site owner purposefully goes out seeking links (such as posting on blogs/forums, directories); while SEO covers the larger topic of attracting a search engine's attention (including link building).

Please share your thoughts on this subject as to weather SEO and link building are the same thing? Or, if they are variations of the same subject?

SEO and link buildings technique, both are related with each other. Simply link building is one of the technique in SEO which will helps in getting backlinks .

Link Building is a SEO's technique.
SEO include a lot of techniques for Optimize your website for Search Engine, so Link Building is one of the techniques.
It consist in get your link back on other websites.
As more high is the page rank of website that will back link to your website, more your rank and website get authority.

I got confused with this topic because my understanding of backlinks is that it is only a part of SEO methods. I have just learned about link building recently but I fully understand the function and the benefit that the website gets from it. Maybe it has something to do with the crawlers that the search engines also take into consideration the backlinks that you had spread in the internet. For quality backlinks you get a premium with search engines.
