    A reciprocal link is a mutual link between two objects, commonly between two websites, to ensure mutual traffic. For example, Alice and Bob have websites. If Bob's website links to Alice's website, and Alice's website links to Bob's website, the websites are reciprocally linked.

    Google has stated:

    Excessive link exchanges ("Link to me and I'll link to you") or partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking


    An occasional reciprocal link is not going to kill your position in Google search.

    And, it's understandable that you might have a reciprocal link, even when you didn't ask for it.

    For instance, I'm a regular reader of one of my friend's blogs. And, I always comment on her blog posts. When commenting, I include my link back to my own forum. Since she is a regular member of my forum, her link is also on my forum as part of her signature line. So we have a 'reciprocal link' going on there. However, this is a rare thing and I don't actively seek out reciprocal links, this just happened. I'm not going out of my way to avoid it. It's just trouble when you actively try to trick Google into thinking your site is more popular than it really is by using 'excessive' link exchanges, rather than an occasional one.

    I thought that having a mutual link is called link swapping. Anyway, a mutual link is normal for friendly sites especially between sites that are owned by 1 person. However, I understand that if a site has too many reciprocal links then it is obvious that it has something to do with cheating. But if I were Google maybe it would be a waste of time to check for reciprocal links since it is not a big matter regarding the SEO.
