Wasting your writing energy on trivial matters

If you are a paid freelance writer, you will be writing articles, press releases, ebooks, forum posts and blog posts for a living. But, there are many kinds of unpaid writing that can actually waste your energy, including Facebook private messaging, emails and texting. This type of casual writing conversation is so time consuming and also requires just as much creativity as you would put into a blog post.

Do you find that your writing energy is wasted on these type of things?
And, how do you manage to block out these time and energy wasters so you can focus your attention and writing talents on what's really going to pay?

I will also set up a time when I only freelance. I will not be in a room with anyone else, and no phone either. This allows me to fully concentrate on what I need to be doing.

I don't mix business and pleasure when working as it can hinder productivity. Since I'm writing and publishing anyway, my work can be done offline or online with the same ease, so long as I have access to my research. So sometimes, I will just go offline and work on my Word document until it's ready to be published online. And, that prevents others from interfering with my work day.

Be strong and learn to say no to distractions and interference that will rob you of time and money. When you have done all your work, then that's the time to take off to check private messages on Facebook or do other trivial things, not before.

Keeping your energy focused on your job is important if you want to earn money when working offline or online. You can't give in to distractions or you get off track and will not get the paycheck.

This is especially true, if you are a writer who blogs about a specific niche. Then it would be most important to keep up to date on your industry's developments.

Not everyone is a writer, some people do bookmarking or coding as a job. So it wouldn't be a really big deal to respond to a few messages.

I'm sure it would depend on your niche. And, of course, it's important to respond to customer emails. Mostly, I was referring to personal Facebook messages or taking personal time when you should be working.

If I get low on energy then the whole house suffers. I let my family know when I am working and they know that I expect not to be disturbed in this time. I can not deal with trivial matters at this time, so they will either need to figure it out themselves or wait.

There are many types of distractions, not just emails and Facebook. Other things like hobbies or unpaid projects can distract from work and keep you from earning to your maximum potential.

Since I have a part-time career in health care, I write and promote in my "free time". This mostly happens in the evenings, or through the day when my son is in daycare. This allows me to have the right amount of focus I need to finish the work at hand. Playing music in the background helps speed up the creative process for me, as it encourages my mind to roll out the thoughts, flowing onto the keyboard.

I love writing! It's great, and therapeutic!

You can't devote every second of your life to work. If you ignore your family and friends, they will grow apart from you and possibly leave. Find a good balance between work and personal life and learn to manage your distractions and keep them to a minimum so all your work time can be used productively.

I regularly check my emails and messages in Facebook for important matters that I may find there. But I post on Facebook once a day only and all I do when checking the messages is to bypass the timeline. Checking on posts in Facebook is one great way to waste your time. Especially when there are lots of interesting posts, you are spending an hour or 2 without even noticing it.
