Thanks for the great question. And, I hope you don't mind, but I moved your question here so we can discuss this more fully.
We have a lot of really good members on our SEOClerks forum. If someone is making a real effort here to be helpful to the community, they won't need to worry. Those type of posts are always appreciated. Spammers however, are not welcome.
One person's idea of spam might not be another's. And, it will vary from one forum to the next. And, what I think of as spam, you might not. Or, vice versa.
For instance, I would always consider link dropping as spam.
Obviously, links to third party sites that are posted for promotional purposes are marked as spam.
For instance, we get spammers on forums asking questions such as for 'best kitchen reviews' and then posting links to those sites. That's spam and it gets deleted when it's seen.
If someone is simply providing a link to a credible/authoritative resource, this would not be considered spam. And, we appreciate when members can provide helpful links.
Sometimes, spammers work in teams with one person asking for a recommendation on a site or service, while the other one comes back to drop a spam link in a response.
These type of spam posts are fairly easy to spot.
Self promotion is another form of spam. We all have signature lines and can make good use of them. If everyone decided to drop a link to their own services in a post, it would be spam central around here.
On some forums, talking about a competing site or going off topic is considered spam and those type of posts are deleted.
There is some controversy about whether or not short posts are considered spam.
And, I think it depends on how often someone is making short posts. It might be OK to make an occasional short (one or two word) post, but when a member's last thirty posts are nothing but 'thanks' and 'great idea!', then it's obvious he's just post count building. And, a post count builder is not only going to have their posts deleted but will get banned.
I don't mind one line posts, so long as they contain useful information that pertains to the thread. Not everyone is so wordy.
Those are just a few of the things that I would consider spam, not all inclusive.
