Are forums a dying breed?

Is there really a need for forums now? For instance, with the other social networks, do forums even need to exist? Of course, you have the situation where they need technical support forums for a specific product such as the Microsoft or Xbox forums. But other than that, what's the use of forums?

Forums are more about conversations between people who have a common interest rather than chit chat between friends as you find on Facebook. So there will always be room for forums online.

Facebook is nothing like a forum. Actually the Facebook profile (for the regular user) is similar to the forum profile. But that's about all they have in common.

Friendship is one good use for forums. Not everyone is a social butterfly in real life. And, many younger and older people live so far away from immediate family. This is true of seniors who's children have grown up and now gone away to other states or countries to have their own family. These elderly people are alone and so it's nice they have forums to talk with others, to break the loneliness. You can see how good this would be for someone who had no family to speak with.

I never thought of it that way before. I had only considered how people use Facebook for friendship. But when you think about it, there is not really a chance to have real friends on Facebook as most people are only adding in real life friends and family. On a forum, it's assume you are not friends with the other person in real life at the start. So it's considered ok to get to know that other person and develop some kind of friendship even on the forum.

I don't see how you can say that forums are a dying breed. Just look on Google for 'forum' and any subject you want (such as business marketing forum) and you will see hundreds or thousands of forums for that niche. Try any niche and you will find there are thousands of forums available. No way forums are dead.

Just because there are thousands of forums, doesn't mean all those forums are very popular. Many new forums open daily online but very few ever gain great popularity. Otherwise why all the abandoned forums that are no longer receiving posts?

There will always be a use for forums, so long asyou need support forums for products. If only for this one reason, forums are not dead.

There is something bigger about forums than what other social media networks do. Forums make a member connect with people that can help to better his ideas on things and career with good posts and quality comments unlike what we have on some social media networks.

I am torn in this issue because my stand on forums is that they are specialized membership unlike social media which is an open network that anybody can join. However, I have seen some forums in our locality that are giving way to Facebook. Instead of running the forum, they shifted to Facebook Goup and Facebook Page. Perhaps the reason is economic although we know that we can earn from forums. But I think forums will not be totally obsolete.
