    Do you warn before you ban?

    If there is a forum member on my forum that has actively participated in the site in the past but suddenly starts spamming, then I try to resolve the situation first before enacting a ban. But, for things like flaming or trolling, I always do a temp ban as there is no reason to allow a troll to wreak havoc on forum, which gives the member a chance to cool off.

    I wouldn't wait for three warnings to ban if the person is harassing other members. Why would you give someone three chances to misbehave like that? But, for something like posting too fast or flooding the forum with posts quickly, then you might consider a warning which might result in a ban after three warnings. That would actually make sense.

    Most forums have a points system where ban is automatically earned after accumulation of a certain number of points. And, this can be useful for some low level offenses such as spamming. However, this also relies on moderators to diligently issue warnings often enough to deter wrong doing on the forum.

    For me it really just depends on the situation. If it's spamming, I issue a warning first before anything else. If they are being obnoxious without being too insulting, I issue a warning... However, if they are putting my members down by calling them names and making them feel useless and stupid... They are gone for good. There's no getting back in once you cross that invisible line.     lol yeah! That is rude. Glad other people see it that same way too. Disrespect of staff is another thing I don't tolerate. Staffers abide by the rules just like everyone else and when they try to enforce the forum rules against rude/abusive trolls they get stomped on for it publicly by the person who was moderated. On my forum that troll gets insta-banned.

    There's a difference between rude and being opinionated though. Moderators monitoring the conversations will know, but sometimes it can become borderline. Do you warn before you ban?

    If someone were ranting on forum, I would most likely send a private message to ask why they were so angry and tell them to chill out and not get so worked up over things. Even when there's a problem, there's always a civilized way of discussing things and that's true even for a debate.

    If someone were ranting on forum, I would most likely send a private message to ask why they were so angry and tell them to chill out and not get so worked up over things. Even when there's a problem, there's always a civilized way of discussing things and that's true even for a debate.


    I like it when things are more laid back on a forum, no drama or tension. I don't mind when people disagree or offer differeing opinions, but just 'use your indoor voice'; no need for public spectacle. Do you warn before you ban?

    I think that a warning is nice and a way to resolve the issue if you can. If you warn and it still continues then something steeper needs to be done.

    Maybe you can just private message the person to say, "Hey! Calm it down!" or use some light humor to diffuse the situation rather than taking it to World War 3 instantly with a ban.

    I guess it is imperative to send a message of warning to the member before the actual banning. Try your best to make him reform. A member is an asset no matter what his personality is and if he has the will to reform and tread the righteous path then so be it. But I understand that a member to be banned is willing to face that sanction and doesn’t have the volition to be in good terms with the forum anymore.
