    Dealing with staff frustrations

    It's only natural that staff members can become frustrated, especially when over worked or dealing with a trolling member. How do you deal with forum staff when they are frustrated? What are some of the things you can do to help forum members be able to safely vent their frustrations so that it doesn't leech out onto the forum and affect the happy vibe of your forum?

    Start a private subforum where your forum staff can post about their daily frustrations. Allow a more open type discussion of members and forum issues behind the scenes with the understanding that none of the things discussed can be shared openly on the forum.

    Letting your staff bad mouth your members, even in private might lead to an “us vs them” mentality where staff feel it's ok to be abusive to the people on forum they are supposed to help.

    Curb any negativity or bad mouthing that might come up in these behind the scenes talk sessions and try to focus attention on problem solving not pointing fingers or placing blame.

    Don't let people get angry on your forum, especially staff members as this can cause a rift in your forum and make people want to leave. If they need to air out some gripes, then ask the person to take it off forum or send you a private message or email restating the problem.

    I'd rather see forum staffers griping in the staff room than in the open forum where it will only antagonize the forum members being talked about. But, how far do you let it go? Do you actually let the staffers name the individuals they are having problems with and does that lead to animosity if word gets out?

    I understand the staff frustration because I have a friend who experienced that. He was handling a troll that was very persistent in picking up a fight with some popular members. Obviously, the troll was an undercover agent of a competing forum. Fortunately, the admin, who is the owner, has full understanding of what’s happening. Without the support of the admin, I think the mod would have quit his job. I agree that sometimes the moderating job can get into your nerves.
