    Do you ever run forum contests?

    What's the best kind of forum contest that you can run? Also, how can you ensure the forum contest is fair so there are no cheaters?

    Forum contests can be useful sometimes, but not the best long term solution as anyone posting for the contest will just stop once the contest is over.

    That's the problem in having a contest in your forum. The interest of the community wanes once the contest is over because losing in a contest creates an aftertaste, so to speak. Especially when the contest requires effort like vying for the best thread in the forum. I'm sure there are some who would expect to win with their thread. And when the result comes out to learn that they lost, there is a tendency to quit visiting for a while.

    Theme your forum contest to your site, don't just run a posting contest to get more posts. Ask people to submit content for your blog or graphics for the site.

    Post the most contests provide temporary spikes in posts made on forum but unless you run that same contest weekly, your volume of posts will drop drastically the minute there is no prize to win. You have to decide between putting that same money on a prize for your forum contest or actual advertising for forum members who will post without incentive.

    Exactly Beverly. It is nice to see those spikes but at the same time, could that money for the prize be used elsewhere?

    I like the idea of running them once in a while but all the time is a bit over the top. Maybe once every few months.

    Contests can be great ways to get others posting on your forums. I think that from time to time they are good to have.
