How can you turn one time visitors into long time members?

It's easy enough to get visitors to a forum. Simply invite people from other related forums to come by. But, how can you turn those drop in guests (who might register and post a comment or introduction) into long time loyal members?

America

Give some type of incentive to guests to sign up, such as a free ebook or other valuable bonus. And, be sure there are many other perks for posting, not just joining.

Have posting contests. Offer something valuable to the person who is posting. Give out titles in relation to how much someone post.

Create an interesting post and link to it from your signature line on other forums, rather than linking to your home page. If the post has many responses, it is likely to inspire the visitor to sign up to add their own opinion. This is the easiest way to turn guests into members as they see how much fun others are having on the forum.

Beverly made a good point, you can link to threads instead of your homepage. On webmaster forums, I have seen people link to tutorials which are really helpful and that certainly got me to join the forum. If you have helpful guides, don't be scared to advertise them because if you let people know you have helpful material, they will want to stick around and explore it all. They might also want to add to them which could make them want to stay. It isn't just for webmaster forums, if you have a gaming forum then link to interesting reviews.

Add interesting posts and threads. And as an admin, you will want to make sure that the threads your members are posting are getting comments on them.

If your forum is truly interesting then a simple reply to the post of the new member will do as a welcome mat. There are forums that send validation email when you register and once you validate your account, you will again receive an email welcoming you as a valued member. Maybe you can add to that welcome email what’s in store. But I’m sure if you have an ongoing contest or something of benefit to the new member, it is a hook for him to come back.
