What about slow activity times on your forum?

How do you increase activity during times when people are offline, such as holidays or summer time? What activities can draw members back into the forum to post?

Contest are a great way to do this. Have a neat prize for the person that posts the most during this time.

Christmas and summer time is a slow time on my forum where I am admin. We have special events during those times to keep members on the board posting.

In the past I have done things such as hiring posters to keep things active for the other members so it doesn't feel less active as well as contests with cash and other kinds of prizes that anyone can enjoy.

I think what you will need to do in this kind of situation will always be based on your niche, certain ones will only be active in certain parts of the year and others will become active/not active for different reasons at different times of the years.

My friend had a forum a few years ago and in the summer it became inactive, so he asked me to post on it for a few weeks just to keep it going through the slow parts.

That will be a good idea. One of my best friends helped me post on my forum when it was just opened and for the first two years. Now she has a successful blog and drops by on occasion. I still value her input into the forum as many of her original threads are still up and getting comments.

This is a good idea, as a big cause of forum member inactivity can be related to inactive forum staff who never post on the site. If site staff can't be bothered to post on the site, members might figure why should they.

Ask for contributions to your tutorial section and allow link backs to other reputable sites. This will attract writers to your forum.

When the community becomes inert, just let it be. Forcing yourself to post will only be in vain since most members are off line due to the holidays. In one local forum here, the admin and moderators take a vacation during the Holy Week, that's a 4-day weekend for a religious observation. They don't mind the lull. But on the following Monday, a beehive is expected.
