Do you set limit on new responses a discussion can have?

Do you lock a thread after a certain number of responses or leave it open indefinitely?

I think that leaving it open is a great idea. Who cares if it is an old thread. This sort of stuff does not bother me.

I don't mind having 100 responses to a discussion, but I will lock the discussion after a month. If forum members want, they can simply start a similar thread.

Leave it open as long as it is getting some good responses to it. If the responses are the same or just not fun to read then maybe close it.

I have owned a lot of forums over the years and I have never done with nor even considered it. I don't know any forum owners who does this and cannot imagine any reason you would.

I guess there would be rare cases with specific types of threads but just in general it seems like a bad idea.

Yes if there is still a lot to be said then keep it open. It is not hurting anything.

I wouldn't lock old threads. Then again, maybe if it were a really old thread. I have seen some very old forum threads dating back five years or more that were long ago resolved and now people just post there to bump post count and it gets a little annoying that no one bothers to start a new thread.

No, I don't. I tend to let a thread just keep growing unless it is an issue thread. If it is a question that has been answered about the site then I lock it but any normal and general thread then I will just let it grow. If that thread becomes an issue with the community, then I will lock it until things calm down and all sorted out.

That is always a good idea. Sometimes a really good thread will get derailed with heated conversation and that messes everything up. Just locking it shoudl be enough to calm things down for awhile until you can get the thread back on track.

Good Idea there Jadster. I think that once things are cooled down, and things do not get so heated, then it could be unlocked. Never thought of this option before.

Locking a thread really puzzles me. What is the main reason for locking a thread that is not considered trash? If it is a bona-fide thread that had a last comment 2 years ago, what is the problem if someone would revive it? I’m sure it will only be revived if it is still relevant with the times. Take the case of the US election, why would you post a comment on that topic when you know that it is over already so your comment will not make sense. But if the topic is about the bombing of the World Trade Center then it would depend on the new comment if it is relevant or not because that issue does not become obsolete like the presidential election.
