Should you link to high authority sites in your content?

There was some discussion about this in the group chat the other day and I was reading something about it on here earlier as well in another faq, plus it's something that's coming up more and more now as people are discovering the benefits to it.

Should you link out to a high authority site in your content? A site of relevance for example that is also a high authority site. Example: a Wiki page.

What are the benefits, pros and cons to doing that? Can your content receive extra credibility for doing so? Wont you loose some traffic and link juice from that?

I already know how it can help because I've been doing it for years because it can really help. I do it on my own sites, and I do it on my Web 2's etc. By linking to a high authority site in that content, a site that is RELATED to your content, you're adding some extra value to that content, for the reader. So from a peoples perspective, they are going to find a link to a resource that expands on something in more detail perhaps, or perhaps has something else said about it which you're content is covering.

And from a search engine perspective, they can see that you have that link out to another source that is also a very high authority site and happens to be related to your content. So they can see that it's also going to add some value to it as well.

But what are your thoughts on this as an SEO method? Surely by doing that, you could be sending away a potential buyer/client to another place and loose out on that right?

But do you think the benefits it can bring from an SEO perspective outweigh any cons like that? And do you do it for ALL your websites content or just every now and then?

Share your experience of doing this as an SEO method.

Thanks

I'll usually link to wiki pages and search engine pages like Google news and the such in order to give my websites a more authority look. It does work very well since not many people who aren't news sites will do this. Not many people like doing this because you could be losing traffic due to people clicking off of your website. The trick I use is to have the link open in a new tab in order to not lose any of my own traffic. Normally your visitors, if they click the link, will keep your website tab open and come back later on before they log off.

I think Google, Yahoo! and Bing like it when a website links to high authority pages/sites because it shows you're trying to be a team player and just help inform someone of content rather that copy/paste it yourself. Now you can copy/paste it yourself and add a link to where it was originally posted, but you'll still be seen as duplicate content. So post your own content and link to the news page where you read it. You'll receive a boost in SEO because of the unique content and the search engines will see that you linked to a third party website.

Thanks,

Razzy

Yeah its no wonder Wiki ranks so high! It is a prime choice for a lot of people who use this method. I try not to use it too much though, instead I'll look for a more related source on a site that is actually related to mine as well. And yes like you have said, you can loose some traffic from it too, that is the downside to the upside it can bring. It can help making it open in new window _blank but that can actually lower the users experience too as people don't generally like new windows opening or open it in another tab in the background instead, well I do anyway. Should you link to high authority sites in your content?

All in all outbound linking is recommended as long as it is done well. It should not be overdone either mind you. At the end of the day there we all agree that Google wants its users to find what they are searching for. Therefore, when you link to one or more authoritative and relevant websites in your site content, you are basically providing a service to Google’s users. As a result, this makes your website a more valuable resource and this is generally taken into account by Google. It can also help in improving your site's authority as well as how professional it looks.

I don't recommend anyone to link your content or website to high authority sites. Consider this. You write an article on heart disease and link your article to another health article written by a cardiologist. You are now giving away traffic. Readers who should have read your article are going to another site because you are a common writer and another article has been written by an expert.

Yeah that's true, but from an authority perspective, you'll be linking to a high authority site and a resource for more info that's related to your article. Such as to a resource that can back up corroborate what you're saying in your article. There are many people that say doing that can help with rankings since Google likes it when you are being resourceful and you have these links to other resourceful sites that are related to yours. Which is why people do that. So sure, the trade off is sending people away from your site, but the upside is that it results in better rankings which means more people on your site anyway. Hypothetically.

There are so many discussions that are pointing to authority sites as the best place to post your backlink. I think there were Edu and Gov sites that were examples. Now we have the Wiki which is somewhat an authority in information. But posting something in Wiki is not that easy to do. You have to be thorough in your research and you should be comfortable with the subject because from what I know it is not good to post fake information there.
