Will you lose your Google account if your Youtube channel is deleted?

If a person abuses Youtube Terms of Service, (such as by uploading copyright content, posting spam comments on other channels), will they only get their Youtube account suspended or would Google take action and delete the associated Google account - which would delete access to the Gmail too? Not that I would willingly break Youtube TOS, but i guess it could happen by accident. And, if so, I would lose everything in my Google account - Gmail, Adsense, it's all there.

I think it would depend on the reason. If it was for a serious breach of conduct like fraud of some kind then it's feasible they would suspend your Google account altogether. Seeing as your YouTube account is used with your Google account. But if it was for something like spam or being reported for using bad language or insulting people too much they would probably suspend or just limit your YouTube account only. So that you couldn't do things like comment or post anything for a while. If you uploaded some copyrighted content or something like that the video would be pulled and they would tell you and give you a chance to fix it. If you only did that once and already have a good long standing account with videos you've had on it for ages and that then they'd take that into consideration. But if you kept doing that all the time like and kept breaking the rules then eventually they'll probably suspend your YouTube account but not your Google account too. As said if largely depends on what it is you've done, how much you do it and if they can see if you use it personal or just commercial reasons. They do know though that your life is tied into your Google account if you use it for personal emailing and business purposes too and will probably only fully delete the full Google account itself as a last resort. But again it depends on the severity of the breach itself. If you're not using your YouTube account for nefarious reasons and you've had it a long long time and have verified it and that and are using Adsense for a long time with it you'll be fine I'm sure.

I have never heard of anyone having their youtube channel terminated and also had their Google account closed, or being shut out from their gmail account at the same time. As stated by idealmike, that would most likely depend on the situation and the reason. I spent some time trying to find a proper answer for this topic but I couldn't manage to find one. However I did find nifty articles explaining that you could get your youtube channel reactivated again, after being punished for breaking the rules, and that you could get your content back too, so I guess they'd close your channel if you broke some of their rules and take further actions in case you did something really extreme.

Yeah there is an appeal process as well don't forget. Virtually anything they do can be appealed against. That is your chance to to say what you need to say about why you think they should overturn their decision and restore your account (should that happen). It's not guaranteed but it can help if you have a really good point or think there has been some mistake in their decision. You should take steps to secure your Google account as well which can really help should this happen. Here's some more tips for keeping your account secure taken from the Keep your account secure help page but I have expanded on them a little myself for extra clarity.

Regularly check for viruses and malware.
Making sure you've got a clean computer isn't just good common sense, it can prevent your Google account ever being compromised by viruses or malware that has password sniffers or key loggers
Do an account Security Checkup.
Go to the My Account page (myaccount.google.com). In the "Security Checkup" section, select "Get Started" and follow the on-screen instructions to check your account security.
Update your account recovery options.
Check that your account recovery options are up-to-date such as your recovery email address in case you ever forget your password or need to recover your account after its been hacked.
Enroll in 2-step verification.
2-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring you to sign in with something you know (your password) and something you have (a code sent to your phone). This prevents access to anyone if they don't have access to your mobile and is a recommended thing to do if you use your Google account for personal and business reasons.
Perform regular updates.
Make sure you've set your computer to update automatically. If you get a notice to update, take care of it right away. Also if there is an update for your browser, update it. By staying updated you're avoiding the chance of falling victim to a vulnerability that may have been patched.
Never use your Google Account password on another website.
If you enter your password in an external website and it's compromised, someone could try to sign in to your Google Account with the same information. Make sure to change your Google Account password. Never use the same password on more than 2 sites. Also, change your Google account password regularly at least once every 6 months.
Protect your password.
Never enter your password after following a link in an email from an untrusted site. Always go directly to mail.google.com or accounts.google.com to login.
Use a strong password.
Don't write it down, send it via email, or tell anyone. Google will never email you to ask for your password or other sensitive information.
If you use a public computer.
Always sign out of it when you're not using it and clear out any saved form data, cached files and cookies etc

While these tips can help to secure your Google/YouTube account, they wont prevent you from doing something wrong. But they can prevent anyone else gaining access to your account who can do something wrong on it. If you didn't take these extra security steps to secure and tighten your account, this could go against you come appeal time as it shows you didn't take your account security seriously enough.

You can remove your YouTube account without deleting your Google account. I have done that in the past and it even gives me the option to create another Youtube account using the same Google account. However, you may risk getting your Google account banned if your YouTube account was deleted due to breaking one of their rules. However, this depends on the situation and which rule you have broken. I believe more serious situations can get your Google account banned. However, you should be able to create a new one. Just make sure you backup everything just in case this happens.

I don't think you will lose your google account when your youtube channel is banned for abusing the service. You get a youtube account by default when you create a gmail account. In order to delete your entire Google account, you will have to close your Google account. When google account is deleted, you will lose access to your entire google services like youtube, gmail, blogspot (if you have created an account), google analytics etc.
